HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A kayaker was rescued after becoming stranded in rough conditions in Hampton Bays Sunday, police said.
According to Southampton Town police, a 911 call came in at about 4:30 p.m. from a kayaker stranded on a sand bar about 500 feet northeast of the Shinnecock Canal, in rough sea conditions.
The kayaker called for help and then jumped into the water, police said.
The Southampton Town Police Department's marine patrol responded to the area along with the US Coast Guard, police said.
The kayaker was located by marine patrol in the water and taken aboard a boat; her kayak was found by the Coast Guard and recovered, police said.
During the rescue effort, a marine patrol officer sustained a leg injury due to the sea conditions, police said. The kayaker was taken to Meschutt Beach County Park where she was treated for hypothermia by the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps, police said.
The marine patrol officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment, police said.
