WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — With caring hearts, students gave back to local veterans, penny by penny.
Members of Westhampton Beach Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society recently raised $300 for Wounded Warrior Project through a schoolwide "penny wars" competition, the district said.
All three grade levels participated, competing to collect the most spare change in support of the cause, district officials said.
"The friendly competition not only encouraged school spirit, but also helped students contribute to an organization that provides programs and services for veterans," the district said. "The NJHS plans to continue its community service work in the coming months."
Upcoming initiatives include projects to support local first responders and a book drive benefiting the Book Fairies, the district said.
