LONG ISLAND, NY —A potentially "life-threatening" high rip current risk is in effect across southern Nassau County and parts of southwest Suffolk County Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.
According to the NWS, a high rip current risk is in effect in Nassau County for Atlantic Beach, Long Beach, Lido Beach and Jones Beach, and for Suffolk County at Gilgo State Park and Robert Moses State Park.
Beaches with a moderate rip current risk Tuesday include Cupsogue Beach County Park, Smith Point County Park, Hither Hills State Park and Ditch Plains, the NWS said.
"Life-threatening rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone," the NWS said, of the high-rip current risk beaches. "Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf. If you enter the surf zone, always have a flotation device with you and swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and yell or wave for help."
