2 Stranded Jet Skiers Rescued From Shinnecock Bay: Sheriff

The two jet skiers had been stranded in the bay for more than 30 minutes, Sheriff Errol Toulon says.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Two stranded jet ski operators were rescued from the Shinnecock Bay Saturday, according to Sheriff Errol Toulon.

Members of the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office marine bureau rescued the pair during a routine patrol, he said.

While on patrol, marine bureau deputy sheriffs observed a jet ski taking on water with two individuals in the water, holding onto the personal watercraft, Toulon said.

Upon closer inspection, deputies determined that the jet ski was disabled, he added.

The riders had overturned the jet ski and had been stranded in the bay for more than 30 minutes, Toulon said.

Marine bureau deputies safely brought both individuals and the watercraft back to shore; neither rider was injured, Toulon said.

"The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office marine bureau is out on patrol to help ensure everyone can enjoy our waterways safely throughout the summer," Toulon said. "I commend our deputy sheriffs for their quick response in rescuing these stranded jet ski operators and bringing them safely back to shore."

The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office reminded all boaters and personal watercraft operators to wear properly fitted life jackets, monitor weather and water conditions before heading out, and ensure their vessels are in safe operating condition, Toulon said.

In addition, under New York State's Brianna's Law, all operators of motorized vessels, including jet skis and other personal watercrafts, are required to successfully complete an approved boating safety course while operating on New York waters, he added.
