Pedestrian Struck In Westhampton; Driver Charged With DWI: Police

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — A Riverhead man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after striking a pedestrian in Westhampton, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, on Friday at about 11:03 p.m., a 911 call came in about a pedestrian who had been hit on County Road 31 in Westhampton.

Upon arrival, officers found a male pedestrian lying in the middle of the northbound lane of travel of CR31, with significant physical injuries, police said.

The pedestrian had been crossing CR31 near the Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base, police said.

While crossing the road, he was struck by a northbound red 2005 Ford Mustang, driven by Douglas Chun Mayan,28, of Riverhead, police said.

An investigation revealed that Chun Mayen was intoxicated by alcohol at the time of the crash; he was subsequently arrested at the scene, police said.

Chun Mayen was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and multiple violations of New York State vehicle and traffic law, police said.

He was held overnight at police headquarters for morning arraignment, police said.

The pedestrian was transported by Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance from the scene to meet with Suffolk County Police Department aviation, then flown to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

He sustained head and leg injuries but the injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.

The investigation resulted in CR31 being closed in both directions between the railroad crossing and Stewart Avenue for about 90 minutes, police said.

Southampton Town Police detectives, along with the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance, responded to the scene to assist in the investigation, police said. Officers from the Southampton Town Police Department's patrol division and community response unit, along with officers from the Westhampton Beach Village Police Department and New York State troopers also responded to the scene, police said.
