SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Parts of Suffolk County are under a flood watch for Thursday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Matthew Wunsch, meteorologist with the NWS Office in Upton, said a flood watch in western Suffolk is in effect from about late afternoon until about 10 p.m.
"There's the potential for some pretty significant, heavy rainfall," Wunsch said. "Rainfall rates could be on the order of 1 to 2.5 inches per hour. Luckily a good portion of Suffolk County can withstand a good amount of rain, and is not as susceptible to flooding, but if there are heavy thunderstorms for more than an hour or two, flash flooding is definitely possible for Suffolk."
The thunderstorms will be moving from west to east, across Suffolk, he added.
