HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A homeless man was arrested after it was revealed that he'd been living in a Hampton Bays residence — and later, charging his phone at an outdoor outlet — when the occupants were not home, police said.
According to Southampton Town police, on August 27, patrol officers responded to a residence in Hampton Bays that had a broken window and an unlocked front door.
The occupants had been gone for a few days and when they returned they found the damage to the window and unlocked door, police said.
There was evidence that someone had been staying at the residence while they were gone, police said.
Southampton Town police detectives responded to the location and conducted a further investigation, officials said.
On Thursday, Southampton Town police patrol officers responded back to that residence due to a call from the homeowner, who said that someone was at the residence using an outdoor outlet to charge their phone, police said.
Southampton Town police patrol officers, community response unit officers and detectives were able to identify the man from both those incidents and determine that it was the same individual, police said.
Nelson Juarez Nunez, 24, who is undomiciled, was located by CRU officers on Friday, arrested, and subsequently charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a felony; second-degree criminal trespass, a misdemeanor; illegal use of telecommunications without paying, a misdemeanor; and open/consumption of an alcoholic beverage, a town code violation, police said.
He was held overnight for morning arraignment, police said.
