Big Smiles on First Day of School in Westhampton Beach

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — Students were all smiles on the first day of school in Westhampton Beach on Tuesday.

The rain didn't put a damper on the students' spirits as they met new teachers and learned about new programs.

Middle school students participated in a nontraditional first day, the district said.

Instead of attending 10 periods of classes, middle schoolers took part in school-wide team building and leadership activities, the district reported.

They also spent time getting to know their new teachers and reviewing expectations before enjoying a barbecue lunch. The newly fashioned first day aimed to strengthen teacher-student and peer relationships within the school, school officials said.
