Bomb Scare Near Synagogue In Hamptons Closes Streets For Investigation

"Especially in light of the recent attacks on Israel, extreme caution was exercised," Westhampton Beach Village Mayor Maria Moore says.

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — A bomb scare near a synagogue in the Hamptons led to street closures Tuesday, officials said.

According to Westhampton Beach Village Mayor Maria Moore, a backpack was found in the wooded area by Jack's House, the new Hampton Synagogue's children's center in Westhampton Beach.

As per protocol, she said, the Westhampton Beach Village Police Department called in the Suffolk County Police Department's bomb squad and Westhampton Beach Fire Department, and also closed off surrounding streets and businesses.

The Southampton Town Police Department was onhand to assist, Moore added.

Westhampton Beach Police Chief Steve McManus was in communication with Rabbi Marc Schneier of the Hampton Synagogue, Moore said.

"Especially in light of the recent attacks on Israel, extreme caution was exercised," Moore said. "It was subsequently determined that the backpack contained clothing and other miscellaneous items," the mayor said.

The all-clear was then given, she said.

"The post 9/11 saying, 'If you see something, say something' still applies today," Moore said.
