College Student From Westhampton Critically Injured in Fight Upstate

A college student from Westhampton was critically injured in an assault in upstate New York on Sunday, Oneonta police said.

Tyler D. Giancola, 21, a student at SUNY Oneonta, is currently in critical condition with serious head injuries in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Albany Medical Center.

The City of Oneonta Police Department responded to a call of a fight in progress in the area of 368 Main St. in Oneonta at 2:40 a.m.

Upon arrival the responding officers found a victim on the ground bleeding from his head with labored breathing and immediately requested an ambulance from the Oneonta Fire Department, according to police.

Witnesses on the scene described a suspect in the assault which led to the arrest of Joseph P. Schof, 18, of Bullville N.Y. He was charged with second degree assault, a class D felony.

Schof, a SUNY Oswego student who had been visiting Oneonta, was arraigned in the City of Oneonta Court and released on $5,000 cash bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
