Friends Open Hearts To Help Beloved Mailman Battling ALS

" Unfortunately Joey is now wheelchair bound and unable to walk." His friends hope to buy him a handicapped accessible vehicle.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Friends are rallying to help a beloved former mailman who's facing the health battle of his life.

A GoFundMe, "Jammin' For Joey Benefit," was created by Mean Gene and the Flamethrowers in Hampton Bays.

"In November of 2017, Joseph DeBenedetto, a letter carrier for over 30 years on Main Street and surrounding neighborhoods of Hampton Bays, NY, was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). ALS is a terminal illness that attacks the muscles and impacts physical functions," the page said.

"There is no cure. Unfortunately, Joey is now wheelchair bound and unable to walk. We, his family and friends, are hoping to raise enough funds to provide Joey with the necessary medical aides," as well as with a handicapped accessible vehicle, the page said.
