HAMPTON BAYS, NY — She may be small but her scientific accomplishments have garnered big attention: Hampton Bays Elementary School second-grader Isla Loudenslager took home awards after showcasing her science skills at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair Competition and the New York State Science Fair.
According to the Hampton Bays School District, for her project, "White Out," Isla earned an honorable mention in the BNL competition on June 10 and tied for second place in the state fair, held virtually on June 15.
Isla's project tested the effectiveness of brands of toothpaste in regard to teeth whitening, the district said.

For her research, she soaked ceramic tiles in coffee for two days and then used a variety of popular toothpaste brands to see which would have the most success in whitening the tiles and removing coffee stains, officials added.
"The Hampton Bays School District congratulates Isla on a job well done," the district said.
