Jordan Boris, Brooklyn Man Who Died in Rip Current at Rogers Beach, Was 'Certified Rescue Diver'

The second of two young Brooklyn men who drowned in the ocean waters off Long Island over the weekend has been identified by his sister as 23-year-old Jordan Boris.

Boris drowned in a strong rip current at Rogers Beach–located in Westhampton Beach–around 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 1.

The victim’s sister, Ilisa Boris, says her brother was staying at his family’s second home in Westhampton over the weekend. ”He was at the beach with my parents that day,” she says in a message to Patch.

“This has been a huge shock to my family,” she writes. ”Jordan was a very strong swimmer, a certified rescue diver in fact. We are just heartbroken.”

Boris was about to go back to college to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering, his sister says, and was ”an amazing father” to a two-and-a-half-year-old girl named Faith.

At 1:40 p.m., lifeguards at Rogers Beach called 911 and reported that a man was “struggling to exit the water,” according to police.

Four lifeguards pulled Boris from the water and began performing CPR, police say — but he had already gone into cardiac arrest.

When police arrived, they used an automatic external defibrillator to try and revive the victim.

Despite their efforts, Boris was pronounced dead a short time later at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

“It just doesn’t make sense,” Ilisa Boris says of her brother’s death. ”He knew about rip currents, and he was swimming in the designated areas. There was no warning or anything about rip currents, and I’m not even sure there was one. Unfortunately we will not know until the we get the report from the medical examiner.

In response to commenters at Southampton Press who suggested the emergency response wasn’t sufficient, Boris’ sister writes:

“I can confirm from my mother that everything possible was done in an attempt to save Jordan. Two AEDs, cpr, and he was [incubated]. I am wondering get who spotted him though, and thank the people who tried to comfort my parents.“

Boris had listed himself on Facebook as vice president at his dad’s company, Regal Cleaning. He also shared photos of a young girl who appears to be his daughter.

“My brother was a great person, since his passing I have realized how much so even more,” his sister Ilisa says in a message. ”The amount of people who reached out to me to tell me how much he had helped them has blown me away.”

Long Beach Police identified another 23-year-old man from Brooklyn who died in a Long Island rip current on Saturday at 6 p.m. as Keshawn Carlos.

A high rip current risk issued by the National Weather Service was in effect Monday and it will be once again on Tuesday from 6 a.m.- 9 p.m. at all Long Island ocean beaches.
