LI Gas Station Worker Stole More Than $1K In Scratch-Offs: Police

The man was taking the scratch-off tickets without paying for them, police said.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A Hampton Bays man was arrested and charged with stealing more than $1,000 in lottery tickets from the gas station where he worked, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, Luis Mario Diaz Jr., 23, an employee at the Speedway gas station on Country Road 39, was arrested and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony.

On Saturday, a representative of the business reported that about $1,002 worth of New York State Lottery tickets were missing from the daily count, police said.

An investigation revealed that Diaz was removing the New York State Lottery scratch-offs from the stack without paying for them, police said.

He was released on an appearance ticket to return to Southampton Justice Court on June 29, police said.
