Man Stole Mail From Hampton Bays Resident's Mail Box: Police

HAMPTON BAYS, N Y— A Hamptons Bays resident was arrested early Sunday after he stole mail from a resident's box, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at 1:49 a.m. on Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays. A patrol officer responded to a call regarding a "suspicious incident" involving a man, unknown to the resident, who opened the resident’s mailbox then walked away, police said.

The patrol officer located the man nearby and the ensuing investigation revealed that the male was in possession of several mail items belonging to the resident, police said.

A 24-year-old Hampton Bays man was arrested and charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor, police said. He was transported to Southampton Town police headquarters, processed then released on an appearance ticket with a future arraignment date, police said.
