More Than 17K Without Power As Nor'easter Pummels LI

LONG ISLAND, NY — As the first nor'easter of the season brings heavy rain, heavy wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour, and coastal flooding across Long Island, many are without power.

According to the latest update on the PSEG Long Island outage map, 17,671 were without power across the region at 10:05 a.m

PSEG Long Island issued a storm update Saturday morning.

"The system has held up well amid heavy rain and peak wind gusts of up to 55 mph across parts of the service area," PSEG Long Island said. "The storm has downed trees, branches and wires." The storm has impacted 17,671 of its 1.2 million electric customers across Long Island and the Rockaways, according to the outage map at just after 10 a.m..

As of 9 a.m., PSEG Long Island had restored power to more than 23,000 customers affected by the storm since 7 a.m. Friday, PSEG Long Island said.

Outages are scattered across the service area, with the hardest hit areas in the Town of Huntington and the south shore of western Suffolk County, representatives added.

All PSEG Long Island employees have mobilized to support the restoration efforts, including more than 850 lineworkers, tree trimmers, surveyors and other field personnel, representatives said.

Crews have been working in challenging conditions throughout the night; with continued winds and rain in the forecast, additional outages are expected and PSEG Long Island personnel are on hand to respond and restore them safely and as quickly as possible, representatives said.

To ensure the safety of personnel in bucket trucks, strong winds may temporarily slow restoration efforts, officials said.

Electric service crews are working to assess damage. As the assessment continues and more information is available, estimated times of restoration (ETRs) will be provided and refined, representatives said.

"PSEG Long Island recognizes that being without power for any length of time is a hardship and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding as crews work to restore electric service," PSEG Long Island said.

Customer safety

• Downed wires should always be considered "live," PSEG Long Island said. Stay as far away as possible from them, and if possible keep others, children, and pets away from the wire. Do not drive over or stand near any downed wire. To report a downed wire, call PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour electric service number at 800-490-0075 or call 911.
• Electric current passes easily through water. If you encounter a pool of standing water, stop, back up and choose another path.
• Never use a generator or any gasoline-powered engine inside your home, basement, or garage or less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Use an extension cord that is more than 20 feet long to keep the generator at a safe distance.
