New Details Emerge In LIRR Crash With Car That Left 1 Dead
The LIRR train hit a car just west of Speonk Monday night, MTA says.
SPEONK, NY — New details have emerged regarding a Long Island Rail Road train crash with a car on the tracks west of Speonk Monday night that left one person dead, MTA Police said.
According to MTA Police, the incident took place on Monday at 6:25 p.m. at the S. Bay Avenue crossing in Speonk; the train to Montauk struck a car at the crossing, authorities said.
LIRR personnel confirmed that the crossing gates were down, and the lights were flashing, the MTA said. However, the vehicle was low enough that the front of the vehicle went under the gate, bumping up the gate, the MTA said. As a result, the train hit the car, leaving one person dead, the MTA said.

Identification of the person who died is still pending; the investigation is ongoing, the MTA said.
The 4:30 p.m. train from Hunterspoint Ave. to Montauk was delayed west of Speonk after the crash; emergency personnel was at the scene, police said.
