Fierce Storm Fells Trees, Leaves 3.3K+ Without Power Across Long Island

LONG ISLAND, NY — A severe thunderstorm sent trees crashing into homes and roadways and left more than 3,300 without power across Long Island Thursday, PSEG Long Island said.

According to the National Weather Service, the severe thunderstorm warning was in effect until 6:45 p.m.

"This is a destructive storm," the NWS said, "with 80 mph wind gusts."

Alerts were sent out to residents' phones by the NWS saying flying debris from the storm could be "deadly" to those without shelter.

"Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter," the NWS said. "Mobile homes will be heavily damaged. Expect considerable damage to roofs, windows and vehicles. Extensive tree damage and power outages are likely."
