Southampton Man Crashes Car Into Guard Rail, Careens Into Ditch: PD

The crash took place in Hampton Bays; the man was found walking on the road in Hampton Bays after leaving the scene, police say.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — A Southampton man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated Sunday night after crashing his car and leaving the scene, police said.

According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place around 11:08 p.m. Angel Monfil-Santamaria, 32, was driving a vehicle eastbound on Montauk Hwy E. in Hampton Bays when he struck a guard rail and ran off the roadway into a ditch on the shoulder, police said.

Police responded to the scene of the crash and weren't able to locate the driver of the crashed vehicle; Monfil-Santamaria was eventually found walking on Montauk Hwy E. in the area of Oceanview Road, police said.

Santamaria was arrested and charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor, leaving the scene of an accident, a violation, and several other violations of the New York State vehicle and traffic law, police said.

He was transported to Southampton Town Police Department headquarters for arrest processing and held to appear in Southampton Town Justice Court at morning arraignment, police said.
