Sunday's Storm, High Winds Pack Punch To West Side Of Shinnecock Inlet

Much of the sand recently placed by Suffolk County's dredging of the east cut has washed out, Supervisor Jay Schneiderman says.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Sunday's storm wreaked havoc on the Shinnecock Inlet's west beach — with new erosion sparking concerns.

At least one resident, Rich of Southampton, posted photos of the beach on Next Door Monday, stating, Shinnecock Inlet's west beach was "officially gone."

When asked about the storm's impacts, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman said that there "was some erosion on the west side of the inlet. A lot of the sand that was recently placed there with the county dredging of the east cut has washed out."

Officials were set to assess the erosion, he said.
