Thief Stole Money From Shrine Collection Box In Suffolk: Police

He stole the money on multiple occasions from a collection box at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island in Manorville, police say.

MANORVILLE, NY — A man was arrested after stealing money from a shrine donation box in Manorville, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, he was arrested on Wednesday at 10:26 a.m. in Lindenhurst after stealing from the donation box at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island on Eastport Manor Road.

Police said the man stole money on multiple locations from the donation box.

Major case unit detectives, with the assistance of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, conducted an investigation into multiple larcenies in which the suspect stole money on various nights from March 29 to April 19, police said.

Major case unit detectives arrested Piotr Nerkowski, 49, of Lindenhurst, inside CVS Pharmacy, located on East Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst, police said..

Nerkowski was charged with third-degree grand larceny; fourth-degree attempted grand larceny; resisting arrest; and two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, police said.

He was held overnight at the Third Precinct and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday, police said.
