HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Thanksgiving may be just around the corner but one lucky turkey will live to see a long life thanks to the efforts of one dedicated animal advocate.

According to John Di Leonardo, president and executive director of Riverhead-based Humane Long Island, recently, a domestic turkey was rescued from the side of the road on October 13 in Hampton Bays.

The turkey was brought to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays, where she was treated before being transferred to Humane Long Island, Di Leonardo said.

"HLI is donating a dozen vegan Tofurky roasts to the Center as a 'thank you,' and will be placing the turkey, along with two others we've just rescued from a live slaughter market, at a vegan animal sanctuary where she will be loved and never eaten," Di Leonardo said.

HLI will also distribute 1,000 vegan meals to Long Island and New York City communities ahead of Thanksgiving, he said.
