Watch Amazing Rescue Of 1-Month Old Baby, Kids From Rooftop In Flood-Ravaged Houston

A family of nine was rescued by Westhampton's 106th ANG in Houston, including a 1-month old, 18-month old, 3-year-old and the family dog.

During the darkest of times, the triumph of the human spirit shines through as individuals come together with compassion and courage to help those in desperate need after Hurricane Harvey's wrath left thousands stranded and struggling for survival.

Heroism abounded in Houston, Texas Tuesday, as members of the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing, based in Westhampton, miraculously rescued a family of nine stranded on top of a pickup truck as the floodwaters raged around them.

Michael O'Hagan, public affairs officer for the 106th ANG, said the team performed the rescue from an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter.

A one month year old baby was rescued in a baby type harness, as were 8 other members of the family.

Initially, O'Hagan said, rescuers thought it was just one person who needed help.

"It ended up being a family of nine, an extended family," he said. "Three adults and the rest were kids, as young as one month old, including an 18-month old and a 3-year old."

The baby, O'Hagan said, was lifted up to his mother in the helicopter in papoose-like swaddle.

"The actual para-rescuer, Staff Sgt. Ryan Dush, who made the grab, is a brand-new father himself, with a one-year-old girl at home, so it was pretty emotional for him," O'Hagan said. "It's an amazing story."

The situation in Houston, he added, "is chaotic."

The family's building was flooded so they were rescued, two by two, from the top of the truck, O'Hagan said.

On Tuesday, rescuers from the 106th reported 63 saves from boats, and 12 by helicopter; on Monday, the total included 255, with 200 pulled from boats and 55 via helicopter; two dogs have also been saved, O'Hagan said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the deployment this week of additional New York Air National Guard resources; an HC-130 search and rescue aircraft carrying 15 more airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing left Gabreski Air National Guard Base, headed to Fort Hood in Texas.

And, he said, a regional medical plans officer will depart for Texas on Thursday to assist with the evacuation and transportation of patients from area hospitals.

"As our neighbors in the south continue to grapple with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, I am deploying additional personnel and equipment to assist in continued search and rescue operations," Cuomo said in a release. "New Yorkers are no strangers to the destruction that can come at the hands of Mother Nature, and we are prepared to continue to support these efforts in any way we can."

The governor pledged New York's support to Texas and Louisiana and dispatched 104 Airmen along with three HH-60 Pavehawk rescue helicopters, another HC-130 and several boats and watercraft earlier in the week, the release said.
