WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — The Westhampton Beach High School girls varsity lacrosse team made history this week when they brought home the program's first Long Island championship win.

On Friday, the team traveled to SUNY Cortland to compete in the semi-finals for the New York State title against Queensbury High School.

The girls lost to Queensbury 9 to 8, but the district said what mattered was the girls' incredible achievement.

"Lacrosse is so much more than Xs and Os and wins and losses," Westhampton Beach LAS wrote on Instagram. "Lacrosse is about heart, hustle, grit, and most importantly friendships. It would be so easy to say we failed today and therefore the season was a failure, but what would we be teaching future WHB laxers? What would be engraining in our brains for next season?"

The post added: "Today we lost at states, that much is true. However, we battled back from a 4-0 deficit and then from another 3 goal deficit to force overtime. We never gave up on ourselves or each other. We left everything we had on the field. We lost today but the season was a success. We had the most wins in program history with 13. We beat Sinai and ESM for the first time ever. We are the reigning Class B County and Long Island champions. We were one of 16 girls lacrosse teams still playing today. Most of all, we became a family this season. The future is bright. We learned to play for each other, for the alumni that lit the path to get here, and for the girls who dream of standing where we did today. There’s still history to be made; let’s do it together."
