Bay Shore Man Killed On Robert Moses Causeway; West Islip Driver Charged: Police

A Bay Shore man was found dead on the shoulder of the causeway Thursday afternoon, State Police said.

WEST ISLIP, NY — A West Islip man was arrested after a 27-year-old Bay Shore man was fatally struck on the Robert Moses Causeway Thursday afternoon, New York State Police said.

Troopers responded to the southbound Robert Moses Causeway near Exit RM2 in the Town of Islip at about 1:38 p.m. on June 25 after receiving a report of an unconscious man on the shoulder, police said.

When troopers arrived, they found Yusuf Gul, 27, of Bay Shore, dead on the shoulder of the roadway. Police said he appeared to have been struck by a vehicle.

An investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that Stephen M. Aylward, 63, of West Islip, was driving a 2012 Jeep when he struck Gul on the shoulder, police said.

Aylward was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by the combined influence of drugs or alcohol and drugs, an unclassified misdemeanor, police said.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday morning, police said.
