Local Officials Celebrate Longtime West Islip Resident's Birthday

WEST ISLIP, NY— One West Islip resident recently celebrated her birthday in style.

Norma Downey recently celebrated her 95th birthday, with Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, friends and family.

To commemorate her milestone birthday, the Symphonic Pops of Long Island performed a special concert at the West Islip Public Library. For many years, Norma volunteered with the Islip Arts Council, and had been an avid supporter of the Metropolitan Opera and American Ballet Theater, a press release said.

“Throughout her life, Norma has had a deep appreciation of the arts, and has shown kindness, generosity and love toward others,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “On behalf of the Town Board, we wish Norma a very happy birthday, good health and happiness,” said the Supervisor.

An enthusiast of the performing arts, she spent hours attending concerts held by the Islip Arts Council, the Senior Pops of Long Island, Massapequa Philharmonic and shows On and Off Broadway, the release said.

Downey is also the mother of former U.S. Congressman Thomas Downey and Jeffrey Downey; grandmother to five grandchildren, and the great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren.
