Man Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run

The man was arrested for leaving the scene after hitting a pedestrian in Brentwood on Friday night, police say.

BRENTWOOD, NY - A Brentwood man was arrested on Saturday in connection to a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Brentwood on Friday night.

On Friday, Jose Reinerio Salinas, 41, of Brentwood was walking southbound in the middle of the road in front of 274 Washington Avenue when he was struck by a car traveling southbound that fled the scene at 11:20 p.m., police said.

He was lying in the northbound side of the road when he was then struck by a 2003 Ford Expedition, police said.

The driver of the Ford, 36-year-old Juana Cartagena, of Brentwood, stayed at the scene, police said.

Salinas was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

Cartagena was not injured.

On Saturday, officers arrested Cesar Velasquez, in connection to the incident, police said.

He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, police said..

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Sunday.
