Man Killed; 8-Year-Old Son Seriously Injured In Parkway Crash

The two were ejected from the car after crashing into a guard rail early Wednesday, police say.

BAY SHORE, NY – A Brentwood man was killed and his 8-year-old was seriously injured in a crash on the Sagtikos Parkway early Wednesday, according to state police.

Police responded to a report of a single-car crash on the northbound parkway, south of Exit S3 (Pine Aire Drive) at about 1:30 a.m.

An investigation revealed that 31-year-old Carlos H. Martinez was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan with his 8-year-old child inside the car, police said.

He was driving northbound on the parkway when his car began to exit the roadway and mount the right shoulder. The car then crossed both northbound lanes of travel, where it entered the center median and struck the guard rail, police said.

The car then rolled over in the roadway and onto the 8-year-old child, who was ejected from the car during the collision, police said.

The child was removed from under the vehicle by two good Samaritans who stopped at the crash scene to help.

The child was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip with serious injuries but is expected to survive, police said.

Martinez, who was also ejected from the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
