Officer Visits 12-Year-Old Shark Bite Victim In Hospital

The officer, who provided medical care to the 12-year-old after she was bitten, paid her a special visit while she was recovering.

WEST ISLIP, NY - The 12-year-old girl who was bitten by a shark on Fire Island last week got a special visit while recovering in the hospital recently.

Suffolk Police Marine Bureau Officer Arnold Reyes, who provided medical care to Islip resident Lola Pollina, got a chance to check in on her condition last week while she was hospitalized following surgery for the wound.

Pollina was one of 2 kids who were bitten by sharks on just a few miles apart last Wednesday.

She was bitten while swimming at Sailor's Haven and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries.

Reyes, a member of the department’s Medical Crisis Action Team, responded to the call and provided care for Pollina before she was transported to the hospital for surgery.

During the visit, Reyes gave her a SCPD Marine Bureau hat featuring his shield number and told her to wear it in good health.
