Our Lady of Lourdes School Is Closing: Diocese
The local Catholic elementary school will be closing due to a drop in enrollment, officials say.

WEST ISLIP, NY - The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced on Thursday that Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in West Islip will be closing.
"It is a great loss for the students and parents, as well as the teachers and administrators who have served the school so faithfully," Sean Dolan, the director of communications for the diocese said in a statement.
The closing comes due to the drop in enrollment from 206 students at the end of the 2018 academic year to a current enrollment of 47 students.

The diocese will be sending information on other nearby Catholic schools for students and parents will consider. They will also be providing assistance and support during the transition period.
"Catholic education is critical to the life of the church and to the communities were serve," Dolan said in a statement. "We are committed to our larger, long-term vision to advance Catholic education and Catholic life on Long Island, with financially strong schools that maintain the highest standards of academic excellence and nurture the spiritual growth of our students and school communities."
