Police ID Man Killed in Wrong-Way Sunrise Highway Crash Involving Off-Duty Suffolk Cop
BREAKING: Prosecutors say the officer had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit after the September crash.

Suffolk Police have identified the man who was killed in a fiery wrong-crash on Sunrise Highway that involved an off-duty Suffolk cop who prosecutors say was drunk and driving the wrong way on the highway.
The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office used DNA to identify 37-year-old Brian J. Fusaro, of Bay Shore, as the person who died after his Ford van slammed into a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder that was going eastbound in the westbound lanes around 4:38 a.m. on Sept. 27 between exits 39 and 40 in West Islip, police said.
The van caught fire and Fusaro was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Suffolk Police officer who was in the Nissan, 24-year-old Robert Scheuerer, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Scheuerer, who remains hospitalized, is charged with first degree reckless endangerment, a felony. He due in court on Nov. 17.
Prosecutors say Scheuerer had a blood alcohol content of .17, more than twice the legal limit, following the crash, according to a News 12 report.

Scheuerer has been suspended without pay from the police department.
