Pupils Volunteer to Help at Marathon

Races Support Suffolk County Veterans Organizations

Members of the fifth grade Student Government and Peer Mediators at the Connetquot Central School District's Idle Hour Elementary School are back for the third year as volunteers at the CHS Suffolk Marathon on Oct.29.

Every year, the students distribute water to the runners and cheer them on. They are very excited to be able to support the runners and perform this community service.

The Idle Hour Student Government is made up of 5th graders who want to make a difference in our school and community. In the past, the club has organized toiletry drives, sock collections, pet supply collections, toy drives for the children at Stony Brook hospital and made cards as well, has made cards for veterans and collected items to be shipped to service members overseas.

The pupils have been guided by Lara McNally, youth and family services coordinator, and classroom teachers Lori Gehrke and Claire Bancroft.

The third annual CHS marathon, half marathon, 5k run/walk and four-member marathon relay races will start and end in the village of Patchogue. The races are a fundraiser for Suffolk veterans organizations. The races are accompanied by the FreedomFest: Taste of Long Island festival, which features entertainment, plus food, wines and beers produced on Long Island. The races get underway at 8 a.m.
