She's Picture Perfect

West Islip junior reflects on perfect game

It was a perfect day for West Islip's Megan Henry on May 14, 2010. The junior pitcher for the Lion's softball team threw a perfect game, striking out five, and allowing her defense to take care of every other batter that came to the plate for the Smithtown East Bulls.

Henry has been a solid pitcher for Lion's the entire season. Three days prior to Henry's perfect game, she tossed a two-hitter in five innings against Newfield High School in Selden. The Lion's star pitcher ended the 2010 season with 7 seven wins and 5 losses.

"I was a little nervous, but I kept my cool. I had faith in my defense. They were solid the entire game," Henry said of the final three outs she needed for the perfect game.

After the game, Henry's coach, Michelle Jantzen, sent her a text message that she has permanently saved on her phone. It reads, "I can't express how proud I am, you did an amazing thing today."

Henry love for softball dates back to her days as a toddler. At 4 years-old, she was playing t-ball and at 8, she was playing in an organized softball league. As an eighth grader at Udall Middle School, Henry was called up to pitch for the JV-9 high school team.

The two sport varsity athlete who also plays in volleyball  hopes to do just as well, if not better, in her senior season for the Lions next year. This summer, Henry will play for the L.I. Mustangs travel softball team.

"I haven't really thought about playing in college yet," Henry said. "Although if any offers are made I will certainly consider them."

Henry says her favorite athlete is Jennie Finch, gold-medal pitcher for the United States softball team. Finch is considered one of the best softball players in history. Ironically, Finch also played volleyball and softball during her high school years at La Mirada, C.A. With Henry's hard work and dedication, combined with her passion for the game, she has the potential to have an extraordinary senior season for the West Islip Lions.
