SPCA: Dog Chained to Cinder Block Found Dead in West Islip Canal Likely Drowned

Reward being offered for info leading to an arrest in possible felony animal cruelty case, officials say.

A $3,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the death of a dog found chained by her neck to a cinder block in a West Islip canal last Thursday, the Suffolk County SPCA announced on Sunday.

The female brown and tan colored Rottweiler mix, estimated to be about 7-years-old, was found floating in a canal behind a home Secatogue Lane East on Thursday morning by a resident who wishes to remain anonymous, according to the SPCA.

A necropsy found changes in the dog’s lungs that are consistent with drowning, SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.

The SPCA is investigating the death as a possible felony animal cruelty case. The $3,000 reward is being offered by the Suffolk SPCA and New York State Humane Association.

Gross said it was “unconscionable to believe that anyone could commit such a heinous act of animal cruelty.”
