VIDEO: Udall Takes Down Beach St. In Annual Hoops Classic

Udall wins battle of West Islip middle schools, bragging rights for the year.

The West Islip High School gymnasium was packed Wednesday night for the annual Beach Street vs. Udall Middle School basketball game. In an exciting back and forth battle, Udall was able to take down Beach St. 41-36 after five seven-minute periods.

“Overall it’s just a great experience,” Udall coach Brian Cameron said. “It’s just great to see the community come together. You saw today it looked like there was 500 people in the stands and the boys really get excited for it. There’s always good sportsmanship that goes on. The boys play hard and they’re…playing against their friends that they’re going to go to high school with.”

The game was tied with just over three minutes left before Udall took over and sealed it with a put back on a missed free throw to take five-point lead with less than 10 seconds left.

“Today Billy Hellem was one of our big guys and did a great job rebounding. He made some key baskets and hit one at the end,” Cameron said. “Robby Lang, one of our guards, really stepped up today and took charge with the ball. He was very unselfish. I’m just really proud of these guys today.”

Once the final buzzer sounded, Udall’s bench cleared as they gathered at half court to celebrate before the two teams shook hands to end a fun night at the high school.

“They end the regular season here every year and it’s the only time during the year they play at the high school,” said Chris Hillier who runs the West Islip Hoops booster club. “They get the packed gym every year and it’s always great to see the parents get into it. It’s a good time by all that’s for sure.”
