Wanted LI Man Found Asleep At The Wheel In CT: PD

The 31-year-old was wanted by Suffolk Police on forgery charges, police said.

GREENWICH, CT — A wanted Long Island man was found asleep at the wheel of his car last week in the travel lane of a Connecticut roadway, according to Greenwich police.

West Islip resident Matthew V. Amato, who was wanted by Suffolk County Police on an active extraditable warrant, was found by an officer on patrol in the travel lane of Sound Shore Drive in Greenwich at about 6:15 a.m. on April 25, police said.

Amato's car, a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was "positioned in such a fashion that it was a potential hazard to other motorists," police said.

While speaking with Amato, officers learned of the warrant and placed him under arrest as a fugitive from justice, police said.

The 31-year-old was charged with second and third degree forgery, police said.

Amato was held in lieu of bail of $500,000. He is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on May 9.
