West Islip Boating Club To Offer 'Engine Maintenance Course'

Participants will learn fundamentals of gas and diesel engines to perform basic boat maintenance.

WEST ISLIP, NY — Long Island skippers will soon have the opportunity to learn how to upkeep their beloved boats for the winter.

America's Boating Club of the Great South Bay Power Squadron will be offering an "Engine Maintenance" training course, beginning Oct. 3. It will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the West Islip Public Library, located at 3 Higbie Lane in West Islip.

The eight-week class will teach the fundamentals of gas and diesel engines to perform basic maintenance, and diagnose challenges underway. Participants will also learn about transmissions, propellers, and steering.

It will also include:

  • Basics of engine configuration and operation for gasoline inboards, outboards, and diesels
  • Mechanical systems such as drive systems (propellers), steering systems, and engine controls
  • How to diagnose challenges that might be beyond your ability to fix
  • How to share information with your mechanic
  • An exam at the course's completion

The course will meet on Oct. 3, 17, and 31, Nov. 7, 21, and 28, and Dec. 5, and 12.

The cost for each participant is $85, or $65 for America’s Boating Club members, with registration and payment made in advance.
