West Islip Driver Injured in Wrong-Way Crash

The 74-year-old suffered from a medical episode while driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway, Suffolk Police say.

NORTH BABYLON, NY - A West Islip man was injured in a wrong-way crash in North Babylon on Sunday afternoon, according to Suffolk Police.

Robert Wolf, 74, was driving a 2007 Chevy Malibu on Sunrise Highway South Service Road when he entered Sunrise Highway, just west of Route 231, driving westbound in the eastbound lanes at about 12:15 p.m.

The Malibu then struck a 2002 Dodge pickup truck being driven by John Gallagher of Conway, South Carolina.

A truck wheel fell off during the crash and struck a 2018 Volvo. A motorcyclist swerved to avoid the Volvo and struck the median.

Wolf is believed to have suffered a medical incident prior to the crash and was transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A passenger in his car was not injured. No other injuries were reported.
