West Islip FD Fights Fire on Beatrice Avenue

Home suffers significant damage after Monday morning blaze.

The West Islip Fire Department responded to a fire on Monday morning at a home on Beatrice Avenue. Although the department was able to place the fire under control in approximately a half hour, the home suffered significant damage.

At approximately 9 a.m. on June 28, the West Islip Fire Department was alerted to a working fire at 22 Beatrice Avenue. According to Chief Joseph Badala, the fire originated from the back of the single-story home.

Both residents of the dwelling were home at the time, but were able to get out safely. However, two cats succumbed to smoke inhalation, according to Badala.

The chief said the house is going to need some extensive work to make it habitable again. 

The fire is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and the Islip Town Fire Marshal.

WI Fire Department Responds to Plane Crash

On Friday, June 25, the West Islip Fire Department was among the units who responded shortly after 5 p.m. to a plane crash at Robert Moses Park. 

According to Chief Badala, the single engine of the plane was lost during flight forcing the pilot to bring the plane down at Robert Moses Field No. 5. The pilot was transported to Nassau County Medical Center with minor injuries.

According to published reports, the pilot was a government test pilot during World War II. 

Fire Department Responds to Major Fire on Wagstaff Lane

The West Islip Fire Department responded to a major house fire on June 16 at 130 Wagstaff Lane. According to Chief Badala, approximately 100 firefighters from West Islip and surrounding departments responded. 

Badala said that the call was received at 3:14 a.m. and firefighters found heavy fire conditions in the second story in both the utility and bedrooms of the large home.

The home suffered extensive damage.
