WEST ISLIP, NY — West Islip High School was named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2020, the U.S. Department of Education announced on Thursday. This marks the first time a West Islip school received the prestigious award, which honors exemplary education.

"I want to congratulate West Islip on receiving this award," said Dr. Anthony Bridgeman, the school’s principal said. "We work very hard here as a school community, collaborating as a team from the superintendent down to the administrators, staff and students."

The program recognizes great American public and private elementary, middle and high schools based on overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Among those schools, West Islip was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School.

"I am delighted that our high school has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School," Superintendent Bernadette Burns said. "Our learning community is committed to a culture of excellence, and it is gratifying that the dedication and efforts of all to create an environment that fosters student achievement and success are acknowledged."
