West Islip Student Places 3rd In LI Stock Market Competition

WEST ISLIP, NY — A West Islip High School student has made his hometown proud.

Sophomore Jake Avella placed third in Long Island's Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, of SIFMA, Stock Market Game competition, the district announced Wednesday. From September through December 2021, Avella successfully competed against more than 1,400 teams across Long Island to build and manage a diverse investment portfolio.

“I am proud of Jake and his tremendous accomplishment," said Patricia Morgigno, West Islip High School Wall Street teacher. "For 10 weeks, Jake worked diligently every day, analyzing his portfolio while learning the fundamentals of personal investing. I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”

The SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game program is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students grades 4 through 12 in the world of economics, investing and personal finance, and prepares them for financially independent futures.

More than 600,000 students take part every school year across all 50 states. The Stock
Market Game has reached 20 million students since its inception in 1977.
