WEST ISLIP, NY - We recently asked our readers on Facebook what's one thing that most people don't know about West Islip?
We got a lot of different responses -- some silly and some serious. Here's just a few of the answers from our readers that we received:
- There was a schoolhouse in front of what is now the Higbie Lane School center
- There used to be a school on Penny Street
- People used to line up to safely hitch hike to the beach on the ramps to the Robert Moses on summer days
- West Islip had its own lumber yard on Union Boulevard and Chestnut Street before it burned down in 1981
- There used to be free summer recreation for grammar school age children
