Why West Islip Athletes Are Wearing Gold Shoelaces This Fall
Gold shoelaces worn by West Islip athletes are helping raise awareness and support for families affected by childhood cancer.

WEST ISLIP, NY — West Islip student-athletes are sporting gold this fall in support of children and families affected by childhood cancer.
The West Islip Union Free School District’s athletics program is once again participating in the Tie Up for Gold initiative, with student-athletes at the middle school, junior varsity and varsity levels wearing gold shoelaces throughout the fall season.
The shoelaces serve as a visible show of support for childhood cancer awareness and allow student-athletes to rally around a cause beyond competition, according to the district.

Student-athletes, coaches and the West Islip Athletics Booster Club each contributed $3 for every pair of gold shoelaces.
Proceeds will benefit the Daniela Conte Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to raise awareness of childhood cancer, assist affected families and support efforts in the fight against the disease.
