WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — One person was killed in a flash flood in Westchester County Wednesday and one person is missing.

County Executive George Latimer, in a morning news conference, said the fatality occurred during the heavy rains from what was Tropical Storm Ida as it tore through the Hudson Valley.

He said he was deferring to the local municipality to release the name of the person who died.

Latimer did say that the search is ongoing for the missing person, who is the spouse of the deceased.

He said the amount of rain that was dumped on the county from Ida ranged from 5 inches to 10 inches.

At one time, each of the county parkways were flooded and some remain closed. More than 200 cars were stranded.

Latimer said, at 4 inches of rain, the parkways start seeing problems, but at 5 inches they shut down.

"It's more than the system can absorb," he said.

Because the weather Thursday calls for no more rain, Latimer said he thought most of the county will be back to normal by the end of the day.

He did, however, caution anyone who is thinking about leaving their home to not do so.

If someone has to travel, Latimer said, they should make sure to know alternate routes. Above all, he said, do not drive through standing water or go around barricades.

"You can drown in a parkway in Westchester County," Latimer said.
