WHITE PLAINS, NY - It wasn’t enough that Kurt Goldschmidt celebrated his 103rd birthday with a big birthday bash at the Waterstone of Westchester on March 30. Now, Westchester County has named a day after him.
The wisecracking centenarian, who won the hearts of his community after attributing his longevity to his daily martini, was basking in the glow of popularity again last week.
Friends and family gathered again at Waterstone of Westchester on April 24 to celebrate Kurt as Westchester County Legislator Jen Puja presented him with a proclamation. Puja announced that May 2 will be Kurt Goldschmidt Day in Westchester County. As part of the tribute, his name will be displayed that day on the Jumbotron billboard in front of the Westchester County Center.
The oldest resident of the senior living community on Bloomingdale Road in White Plains, Kurt was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1923 and is a Holocaust survivor.
“To recognize this tremendous milestone, we are going to display Kurt’s name in lights on our county Jumbotron on May 2, which will be Kurt Goldschmidt Day in the County of Westchester,’’ said Puja. “I know his dance card is always full, so I wanted to make sure that he had enough lead time to be ready on May 2.’’
In fact, Kurt will be flying off to Germany with his family for a return visit to his homeland. He last made the trip 3 years ago at age 100.
