WHITE PLAINS, NY — Kurt Goldschmidt's 103rd birthday celebration did not end with a party at Waterstone of Westchester.
Friends and family gathered again at the senior living community on Bloomingdale Road in White Plains on April 24, when Westchester County Legislator Jen Puja presented Goldschmidt with a proclamation. Puja announced that May 2 will be Kurt Goldschmidt Day in Westchester County. As part of the tribute, his name will be displayed that day on the Jumbotron billboard in front of the Westchester County Center.
Goldschmidt celebrated his 103rd birthday with a large bash at Waterstone of Westchester on March 30. The remarkable New Yorker has attributed his longevity to his daily martini. Last week's event brought another round of recognition for the oldest resident of the senior living community.
Goldschmidt was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1923, and is a Holocaust survivor. The county honor marked another public milestone for the White Plains resident, whose family and friends returned to celebrate with him less than a month after his birthday gathering.
"To recognize this tremendous milestone, we are going to display Kurt's name in lights on our county Jumbotron on May 2, which will be Kurt Goldschmidt Day in the County of Westchester," said Puja. "I know his dance card is always full, so I wanted to make sure that he had enough lead time to be ready on May 2."
The new county day comes as Goldschmidt prepares for another major event. He will be flying to Germany that week with his family for a return visit to his homeland. According to the source material, he last made the trip three years ago at age 100.
