See The The Moment Cops Reunite Baby Accidentally Locked In Car At Target Parking Garage With Mom

WHITE PLAINS, NY — A worrisome incident for a new mom had a happy ending moments after police arrived.

White Plains Police Department officers were dispatched to a call involving a 3-month-old infant who had become accidentally locked inside a vehicle in the Target parking garage. Fortunately, officers were nearby and responded immediately, safely retrieved the keys from within the vehicle, and were able to reunite the mother and child within just two minutes.

Police said the stressful incident was nothing more than an accident.

"There was nothing malicious or negligent about what occurred," WPCPD said when releasing the footage. "Situations like this can happen to anyone, and we're grateful the outcome was a positive one."

In a social media post about the rescue, the department offered some tips on keeping loved ones safe this time of year.

"As temperatures rise during the summer months, we'd like to remind everyone that the inside of a vehicle's interior can become dangerously hot in just a matter of minutes," the department said. "Infants, young children, and pets are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses."

Public safety officials said a few practiced steps could help avoid a crisis:

• Always check that you have your keys before closing your vehicle door.
• Never leave a child or pet unattended inside a parked vehicle—even for a short time.
• If you discover a child or pet locked inside a vehicle, call 9-1-1 immediately. Every second counts.

"We commend the quick actions of Sergeant Todd Horgan and Police Officer Matthew Johnson, their teamwork helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion," the department said. "We're here when you need us — whether it's an emergency, an accident, or simply helping our community stay safe."
