White Plains 9/11 Ceremony Will Honor Local Heroes And Victims At Liberty Park For 25th Anniversary

The public ceremony honoring those lost will include remarks, prayers, a wreath laying and a memorial tree dedication.

WHITE PLAINS, NY — Nearly a quarter century ago life changed for all of us. The community will gather to mark the tragic events that touched so many here.

White Plains will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a public remembrance ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Liberty Park on Lake Street. The city announced the event Aug. 27 and said the ceremony will be held at the site of the White Plains 9/11 Memorial.

According to the city, the memorial honors the sacrifices made by many people and specifically the six White Plains residents who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The annual ceremony is set to include remarks from Mayor Justin Brasch, prayers from faith leaders in the community and a wreath laying. Members of the White Plains Common Council will also place flowers at the memorial as the names of those who were lost are read, followed by a moment of silence.

This year, the city also plans to plant and dedicate an October Glory Maple tree in recognition of the 25th anniversary. According to the announcement, maples have come to symbolize peace and strength, and the October Glory also represents resilience and adaptability in difficult times. The city said the memorial tree will stand as a living reminder of those who were lost and of an enduring commitment to remember.

"September 11 is always a solemn day of reflection, but on this anniversary we pause to remember a day that forever changed our country, as well as the lives of so many in White Plains," said Mayor Brasch. "Time can never dull the pain of that day, but we will reflect on the sacrifices and recommit ourselves to service to our country and each other."

The remembrance ceremony is open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend to honor the nation, the lives lost and those whose lives continue to be affected by the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
