White Plains Woman Now In Custody After Newborn Found Abandoned In ShopRite Restroom: Police

WHITE PlAINS, NY — A Westchester County woman is now in custody after a newborn baby was found abandoned in a supermarket restroom, according to police.

"First and foremost, the department is pleased to confirm that the infant is currently at an area hospital and is in stable condition," White Plains Public Safety officials said in a statement released on Monday. "Westchester County Child Protective Services is aiding in the child's future care. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Multiple crime scenes have been processed or are nearing completion, and investigators are continuing to conduct numerous witness and informational interviews."

In an update, investigators confirmed that a suspect has been identified and is in custody. The department said it is working closely with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office regarding potential criminal charges.

"The WPPD acknowledges that this is a heartrending incident for our community," the department said. "We extend our sincere gratitude to Shoprite, the City Center, and all members of the public who have assisted in this case. Additionally, we would like to recognize the valuable support provided by the Harrison Police Department, the Westchester County Police Department, and the Westchester Real Time Crime Center, as well as the diligent work of our own officers and detectives."
