Your New Ride Is Here: Westchester Unveils 116 Hybrid-Electric Bee-Line Buses, Retiring Diesel Fleet

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Our new ride is here, and looks like we're going to be traveling in style.

Westchester County has introduced 116 new hybrid-electric buses for the Bee-Line Bus System, a move county officials said will modernize the fleet and complete the shift away from diesel-powered buses. County Executive Ken Jenkins announced the new vehicles in White Plains, saying the investment is aimed at improving public transportation while advancing the county's sustainability goals.

The fleet includes 111 New Flyer 40-foot Xcelsior hybrid-electric buses and five 35-foot Xcelsior hybrid-electric buses, according to the county. Sixteen of the new 40-foot buses are designed for express-style service, including the BxM4C route, and include a single entrance door and overhead luggage racks for commuters.

"The Bee-Line is a vital resource that connects people to work, school, health care and countless opportunities throughout Westchester and beyond," Jenkins said. "By replacing our remaining diesel buses with modern hybrid-electric vehicles, we are investing in cleaner transportation and a better experience for every rider. These new buses reflect our focus on building a more sustainable transit system while delivering the high-quality service our residents deserve."

Each of the 116 buses includes bike racks, USB charging ports at every seat and priority seating intended to improve accessibility and convenience for riders, according to the county. The county said the new fleet builds on other Bee-Line investments, including upgraded bus shelters and enhanced rider amenities.

Westchester County Board of Legislators Chairman Vedat Gashi linked the purchase to broader transit and commuter benefits.

"Public transportation is one of the smartest investments we can make for Westchester's future," Gashi said. "It keeps our workforce moving, cuts emissions and puts money back in commuters' pockets."
